I’ve known about the skin care benefits of DIY face masks made from ingredients like honey and avocados since I was a pre-teen. So unconventional face masks are nothing new, but the growth of beauty blogs and Pinterest hacks have helped legitimize DIY masks and beauty elixirs that can be made with a few basic household items. You can just open your fridge and find mask ingredients! It’s easy enough to be skeptical of a book telling you to smear honey and avocado all over your face; it’s hard to argue with thousands of beauty tutorials online that suggest the same. The internet has also helped spread the gospel of other skincare holy grail ingredients, both all natural and lab-oriented. From retinol, green tea, and every floral or fruit based extract you can imagine, we’re all becoming a little more aware of what ingredients we’re slathering on our skin, and what they’ll actually do to benefit us in the long run.
But what about ingredients that seem a little, well, less user friendly? Forget honey and avocados, what about eggs or dirt? Yeast and snail goo? Charcoal and bird poop? Yes, those are ingredients that people actually use on their face, and I can vouch that a few of the ones I just listed really do work wonders. For more info, check out these 11 weird things you should put on your face that will change everything:
Baby Foreskin
Yes, you read that correctly. The cells of discarded baby's penis foreskin create the fountain of youth apparently. Of course, this is an incredibly controversial ingredient, but that didn't stop Oprah from making this company's line one of her favorite products ever.
Bird Poop
You've definitely looked at a pigeon and thought, "Wow, if only that thing could poop on my face and make my skin look amazing." Right? LOL, of course not, but apparently celebs and other rich people with too much money spend upwards of $100 to get a Nightengale facial, which features powdered bird poop. You can get a less expensive version at home with this bird poop moisturizer.
Snail Slime
Sounds gross, I know, but snail goo has awesome moisturizing properties. I can also say this with confidence because I've tried a bunch of snail masks and I've loved every single one.
